Meccha Chameleon Beginner Guide — How to Play

Complete starter guide: rules, roles, first-match checklist, controls primer, and where to go when stuck.

60-second start

  1. **Hider:** Press **F** to paint, **Space** to sample color, **R** to lock a pose — hide before the seeker release timer ends.
  2. **Seeker:** Walk the map with your flashlight (**Right Click** to focus beam) and tag players who look out of place.
  3. **Multiplayer:** Host → **Multiplayer > Host Game**; friends join via **Find Server** (same region + room name). Broken invites? See Invite Fix.
  4. First map: Hide-and-Seek Mansion. Full keybinds: Controls.

Quick answers

How many players do I need?

2–10 works; 4–8 is the sweet spot for one seeker and meaningful hide time. Host should have the strongest upload bandwidth—see Play with Friends.

What should I learn first as a new player?

Controls → paint workflow → one official map (Mansion). Follow this page's Start Here path before Workshop custom maps.

Welcome to Meccha Chameleon—an online hide-and-seek game on Steam where Hiders paint and pose to blend into the environment, and Seekers tag everyone before the timer expires. This page is the Start Here hub for new players.

What Makes This Game Different?

Unlike Prop Hunt or Among Us, hiding is active:

  • Paint your model to match walls, floors, and props.
  • Pose to shrink your silhouette (not just stand still).
  • Whistle mechanics force movement—silence forever loses.

You need a PC, Steam account, and a copy of the game (Steam store). There is no Roblox or mobile version—see Is it on Roblox?.

First Match Checklist

Complete before queuing ranked or public lobbies:

  • Update game — main menu shows v1.8.1 (or current live build); restart Steam if pending
  • Join method — prefer Find Server + password if Steam invites fail (v1.8.1 invite fixes)
  • Learn core keysControls: WASD, F, Space, R
  • Pick Mansion — host selects Hide-and-Seek Mansion for first rounds
  • Simple hide — one wall, 2-tone paint, wall-flat pose; skip meme spots
  • Headphones — stereo audio for whistles and seeker cues

If connection fails, browse the Troubleshooting Center.

Is the game hard for complete beginners?

Hiding has a skill ceiling, but your first round only needs basic paint + a wall-flat pose. Seekers can contribute immediately by walking the map perimeter with a flashlight.
